A holistic approach to health

As anyone who is interested in herbal remedies will agree, a holistic approach to health is the best solution. This simply means taking care of all aspects of our health and wellbeing, instead of focusing on one area only.

So as well as herbal supplements, taking physical exercise and eating the right kind of foods are important for feeling great on the inside and looking great on the outside.

If you are not a fan of going to the gym, then team sports or jogging outside may suit you better. Other people may prefer swimming or aerobics classes; it’s simply about finding something that suits you. Try and do some vigorous, cardiovascular exercise for at least 30 minutes and three times per week, and build gentler exercise into your everyday routine; for example by taking the stairs instead of lifts or escalators and walking wherever possible rather than taking the car.

When it comes to diet, make sure you have a good balance of all the right nutrients. Complex carbohydrates and fibre should make up a big part of your diet and can be found in wholemeal bread, wholemeal rice or pasta and potatoes. If you are not a fan of wholemeal bread, Best of Both is a great solution; this Hovis bread contains all the nutrients of wholemeal with the texture and taste of white bread.

Make sure you are getting plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and aim for five portions a day (one can be fruit juice or dried fruit). Try and vary your choices as much as possible and use fruit and veg in your cooking as well as for healthy snacks.

Protein is also important in your diet and can be found in nuts, meat, cheese and other dairy products. You can make sure your meat is healthier by grilling rather than frying where possible and choosing organic and free range options.
