A holistic approach to health

As anyone who is interested in herbal remedies will agree, a holistic approach to health is the best solution. This simply means taking care of all aspects of our health and wellbeing, instead of focusing on one area only.

So as well as herbal supplements, taking physical exercise and eating the right kind of foods are important for feeling great on the inside and looking great on the outside.

If you are not a fan of going to the gym, then team sports or jogging outside may suit you better. Other people may prefer swimming or aerobics classes; it’s simply about finding something that suits you. Try and do some vigorous, cardiovascular exercise for at least 30 minutes and three times per week, and build gentler exercise into your everyday routine; for example by taking the stairs instead of lifts or escalators and walking wherever possible rather than taking the car.

When it comes to diet, make sure you have a good balance of all the right nutrients. Complex carbohydrates and fibre should make up a big part of your diet and can be found in wholemeal bread, wholemeal rice or pasta and potatoes. If you are not a fan of wholemeal bread, Best of Both is a great solution; this Hovis bread contains all the nutrients of wholemeal with the texture and taste of white bread.

Make sure you are getting plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and aim for five portions a day (one can be fruit juice or dried fruit). Try and vary your choices as much as possible and use fruit and veg in your cooking as well as for healthy snacks.

Protein is also important in your diet and can be found in nuts, meat, cheese and other dairy products. You can make sure your meat is healthier by grilling rather than frying where possible and choosing organic and free range options.

How to stay healthy in 2012

February's now upon us which means that 2012 is in full swing now, so it's time to start thinking about how you can stay healthy this year.

It makes sense to try to use a mixture of exercise, healthy eating and perhaps even herbal supplements to help you on your way.

Perhaps you might want to sign up to some yoga classes or tai chi in your spare time – both of these will really help you get in shape, at the same time as being fairly spiritual and being designed to help your mind too.

There are healing benefits associated with these types of exercise too, so you should really feel or notice improvements in your health, thanks to these.

Unsurprisingly, the diet you choose has a significant bearing on your health and wellbeing too. For example, potassium-rich foods, including bananas, are known to have a positive effect on happiness levels.

You want to make sure you have a good balance of different food types to ensure you look and feel healthy. Making some small changes to your diet could be wise as well – perhaps ditch the white bread in favour of Best of both, if you're concerned about your fibre intake, for example.

Thinking about these little things can really have a big impact on your health.

When it comes to dietary supplements, there are plenty of things you can take to boost your vitamin and mineral intake. This is especially useful if there's one area of your diet that's perhaps lacking at the moment – for example, vegans will find it hard to get enough calcium – and that's when herbal supplements can really help out.

It's really easy to get fit and healthy, so make that your mission this February!
