Horsetail is one of the oldest known herbal remedies. In fact, it is believed that this herb is a close relative of the trees which grew on Earth about 270 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. The Greeks used this herb to help heal wounds and the Chinese used it to help heal fevers. Today, horsetail is the source of the modern cola seams.

Unfortunately, not many people know about the medicinal benefits of horsetail and thus they look at this plant as nothing more than an unwanted weed. On the other hand, herbalists like the medicinal value that this herbal remedy has and thus they harvest it throughout its growing season.

While a lot of parts of this plant can be used, the most commonly used parts are the aerial parts. The aerial parts are where the astringent is found.

However, it is the jointed stems of the plant that are used in numerous herbal remedies. The stems of this herb can also be used to stop bleeding, nosebleeds and heavy menstruation.

Horsetail is also used to treat urinary tract infections and prostate disorders. It can also be used to control bed-wetting and to treat various skin conditions such as eczema and acne. Many herbalists also use this as one of the herbal remedies for lung disease. Other uses for horsetail include treating eye inflammations and infections, such as conjunctivitis and corneal disorders.

There are also many different ways in which a herbal remedy from horsetail can be prepared. You can simmer the aerial parts of this plant for at least 3 hours in order to extract its primary constituents. Another way in which horsetail can be used is as a poultice, made by crushing the plant's aerial parts into a powder and then making it into a paste.

In addition, horsetail can also be used as a mouthwash and gargle when it is diluted. Many herbalists also recommend consuming horsetail as a juice by liquidizing its stems. Alternatively, you can also take horsetail herbal remedy in the form of a capsule. Do, however, check with your doctor before taking horsetail as this herb can have powerful effects.

Chinese Herbal Remedies

Chinese Herbal Remedies - An Overview
By Evelyn Lim

Chinese herbal remedies have been used to treat all kinds of diseases and symptoms for thousands of years ago in China. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a system of healing that has many principles that are not easy to understand because of their many intricacies. A TCM practitioner has to take several years to learn them all and also to draw his knowledge on the various herbs and their interactions for healing. Here, I attempt to explain some of the basic principles using Chinese herbal remedies as a form of treatment.

Chinese Herbal Remedies
Photo: passdt.com

Chinese herbal remedies are divided into 5 different seasons; including fall, winter, spring, summer and late summer. According to the principles that are followed here, the universal energy is at its highest during the summer and herbs are most abundant in the late summer.

All foods can also be viewed from an energy perspective. Of course, food also provides nutrition, vitamins and calories, but it is the energy that is studied here. It is believed that each food vibrates at a specific energy frequency that corresponds to a specific organ. These energies know how to thrive in specific seasons, which corresponds with a specific organ. Thus, some foods can be used as herbal remedies which can help increase or decrease a person's vital energy. For instance, sunflower causes energy to rise, while a plant's root causes energy to flow downwards.

While TCM also regards food as having healing energies, herbs are the ones that used to dramatically help increase the energy within these foods. Many foods and herbs are often mixed together and cooked for hours. Although there is no nutritional value left in the foods or herbs, it is the drink that contains the energy that is required to treat your various conditions.

Here, it is believed that the universe has provided us with a powerful, natural way in which to maintain good health. In TCM, various factors that contribute to your body being out of harmony are examined so that a permanent solution to the issue can be found. It is believed that this is much better than just treating the symptoms.

Chinese herbal remedies can be used for your relief from physical and mental symptoms. In many cases, these herbal remedies are also effective as cures. There can be a great deal to learn from this system of holistic healing. However, you may find it worth the time to acquire some knowledge as this would mean being able to live in complete harmony with your body. Alternatively, if you want to derive the benefits from Chinese herbal remedies, you can always consult a qualified practitioner.

Aromatherapy Herbal

Herbal Remedies Used In Aromatherapy
By Evelyn Lim

Aromatherapy involves the use of aromatic herbal remedies for physical, emotional, and mental healing. Herbal remedies in the form of essential oils from herbs are distilled to produce soothing, healing aromas.

Aromatherapy
Photo: ibspro.net

The essential oils used in aromatherapy are usually volatile. This means that the molecules in these herbal remedies evaporate quickly into the air. Every time when you inhale the aroma of an essential oil, the unique components mix and react with the olfactory membranes in your nose, which are directly connected to your brain. Of course, your brain plays a very important part in how your mind, emotions and entire body are regulated.

You may then think that aromatherapy is just the practice of sniffing different essential oils. However, that is not all that you can do with these oils. Most of these herbal remedies can also be applied onto your skin. When this is done often enough, it becomes doubly effective. This is because the essential oil is being absorbed directly into your bloodstream as well.

The cost of these essential oils can vary quite a lot. Prices vary depending on their availability and the methods that have to be used in order to procure and produce them. For instance 1 ounce of pure lavender oil can be procured for $5 because this is a fairly common plant and easily harvestable. Conversely, you may pay $250 for half an ounce of rose oil.

You are also going to need to purchase a diffuser in order to properly use these herbal remedies. This is a special device that is used to disperse the essential oils into the air. These are usually very inexpensive and, in most cases, an atomizer will work fine. There are also special aromatherapy pottery rings available that fit over the top of a light bulb and are relatively inexpensive as well.

The herbal remedies used in aromatherapy can be used to treat various health ailments. They can help to alleviate symptoms such as stress, depression, digestive problems, skin problems, hormone imbalances and respiratory problems. Most essential oils are quite potent; hence you would need to follow the instructions found on the label strictly. If you are pregnant or have some major illness or disease, you should also check with your doctor on the use of aromatherapy.

Finally, you should note that the one thing that you should not do is to apply essential oils directly to your skin without first diluting it. You also need to ensure that your skin is not sensitive to the herbal remedies that are being used.

Dandelion is considered to be one of the newest additions to the herbal repertoire. Historians have noted that there is no mention of the dandelion plant in Western history until its first appearance in the Ortus Sanitatis of 1485. In traditional Chinese medicine, dandelion was also not mentioned until later times. The dandelion did not become a popular Chinese herbal plant until the 7the century. The name of the dandelion has always invoked curiosity. How did this herb get its funny name? The story goes that the dandelion got its name from a surgeon in the 15th century, who thought that the shape of the dandelion leaves resembled a lion's teeth.

Lemon balm

Lemon balm is a perennial herb in the mint family Lamiaceae, native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. The leaves have a gentle lemon scent, related to mint. At the end of the summer, little white flowers full of nectar appear. In dry climates, it grows best in partial shade. It can also be easily grown as an indoor potted herb.

Lemon Balm and Rejuvenating Herbal Remedies
By Byron Branfield

Lemon balm is one of the most beloved of the healing herbs. The scientific name of this herb-Melissa officinalis-reveals much of its history. It is thought that bees and lemon balm have been inextricably linked since ancient times. The name scientific name Melissa is derived from the Greek term for "honey bee." Moreover, many herbalists agree that lemon balm has much of the same healing and tonic properties that royal jelly and honey has. Lemon balm has traditionally been honored as an herb with the ability to lend rejuvenation. During the Middle Ages, lemon balm was a key ingredient in all medieval elixirs of youth. Even as late as the 18th century, lemon balm continued to maintain its reputation as an elixir of youth.

Herbalists describe the character of lemon balm as sour, dry, cold, and slightly bitter. Lemon balm is known to contain volatile oils (including citronellal), polyphenols, bitter principle, tannins, rosmarinic acid, and flavonoids. The actions of the plant have alternately been described as sedative, anti-depressant, a relaxant and restorer, a digestive stimulant, antibacterial and antispasmodic. It has also known for its ability to promote sweating, relax the peripheral blood vessels, and for its antiviral properties. The leaves of the lemon balm plant are believed to help relieve the symptoms of depression and tension. The leaves are known as carminative, so are thought of as ideal for those individuals who may suffer from digestive upsets when they become anxious or worried. Because of its cooling properties, lemon balm is also good for people who may suffer from feverish colds. The leaves of the lemon balm plant may be used both internally and externally to treat the eruption of cold sores. The herb can be used externally to treat sores or any other kind of painful swelling. The best time to harvest lemon balm is just before flowering. In the summer, the leaves of the lemon balm plant can make a delightfully cooling and refreshing tea.

The essential oil of the lemon balm plant is also popular with herbalists. The concentrated oils from the lemon balm leaves are much more potent than the leaves themselves. Just a few drops of lemon balm essential oil can affect an individual. A few drops of lemon balm essential oil are recommended as an antidote to depression. The potency of lemon balm essential oil is thought to be able to "shock" the depressed patient out of their state. Diluted lemon balm essential oil can also be applied topically to help heal cold sores.

Other popular methods for consuming lemon balm in herbal remedies include as an infusion for hot tea, an ointment, tincture, infused oil, and in a compress. Hot lemon balm tea is used to treat depression, nausea, indigestions, and nervous exhaustion. A lemon balm compress can be applied to any area of suffering from painful swellings, or conditions such as gout. Lemon balm can also be used to create a soothing massage oil. Simply dilute 5-10 drops of essential oil by combining with either almond oil or olive oil, and then rub to relieve chest complaints or other areas of tension.
