Palm Oil Benefits

Palm Oil Usage - The Benefits of Using Palm Oil
By W. L. Yap

Palm oil is a natural raw material which can be used almost anywhere and is thus one of the most popular agricultural commodities. The versatile oil has been used from washing liquids and soap to margarine and cosmetics production. Almost every consumables product contains palm oil. In the European countries, the crude palm is also a primary substitute for rapeseed oil.

Palm Oil For Bio-diesel In Europe, there is a high demand on crude palm oil for bio-diesel purposes. Many major producers are investing heavily in the refineries needed for the process to convert crude palm into bio-diesel. Due to the current high prices of fossil crude oil, bio-diesel is deemed as the alternative fuel source to gasoline for vehicles.

Edible Oil For Food Production Palm oil is an important and versatile raw material for both food and non-food industries. It contributes to the economic development of the producing countries and to the diets of millions of people around the world. The oil is approximately 50% saturated fat and 50% unsaturated fat. Due to such a unique characteristic palm oil may be separated under controlled thermal conditions into two components, a solid form (palm stearin) and a liquid form (palm olein). Palm oil is often used in healthy organic foods since the only other solid organic fats are highly saturated butter and coconut oil.

Crude Palm Oil Production Due to its natural form, palm oil is entirely Genetic Modified (GM) free and has the highest yield per hectare than any other nature oil. This is recognized as a key benefit due to environmental pressures on its expansion to eco-sensitive areas. Plantation land areas are widely located in tropical region of Asia, Africa and South America. The largest producers are Malaysia and Indonesia with a combined output of around 90 percent of the world trade. Malaysia claims that in 1995 it was the world's largest producer with 51% of world production.

In summary, palm oil and its fractions are practical and attractive choice for importers and food manufacturers especially in third 3rd world countries. This is due to its price competitiveness, year round supply, diversity and versatility for edible and non-edible applications.

Holistic Medicine

Holistic Medicine Vs Traditional Western Medicine - Which is Right For You?
By Kay Hutchinson

When it comes to acute conditions such as broken bones, raging infections, stroke, heart attack, or trauma injury, traditional western medicine has a great advantage over holistic medicine in terms of addressing the conditions quickly, thoroughly and in ways that are just not possible with natural approaches to health.

Holistic Medicine
Photo: pawspot.com

Traditional western medicine also has a myriad of sophisticated diagnostic tools ranging from blood work to digital mammograms that can help detect and prevent disease in ways that are not available with holistic methods.

Yet, when it comes to chronic conditions, illnesses that linger in the body, holistic approaches often offer a more effective opportunity to balance root issues that cause disease.

Holistic techniques often involve the use of herbal medicine, aromatherapy and various bodywork therapies ranging from acupuncture, dietary changes, healing exercise, acupressure, medical qi gong, massage and chiropractic adjustments.

Many people who partake of holistic methods may find that they are able to work with their medical doctors to lower dosages or eliminate pharmaceutical medications as their health improves.

However, there are also cautions about holistic approaches. Some practitioners advocate the use of mega-dosages of certain supplements, colonics and parasitic cleanses, and strong detoxifying herbs. While these approaches can be helpful, they are not appropriate for all people, especially for individuals with fragile systems.

Also people, without formal training, may take it upon themselves to try to self-treat or suggest holistic remedies to friends or family members with no knowledge of how such remedies might impact the body other than what they've read in books. They think, "Well, it's all natural so what could it hurt to try this or that?"

Natural does not always mean safe.

For example, one client listened to a relative's advice to engage in colonic and parasitic cleanses that contained high levels of magnesium and potassium and cooling herbs. Yet, this client had weak kidneys and other health issues that made these therapies contraindicated.

The result? She is now on dialysis twice a week because such natural approaches permanently damaged her kidneys.

The best way to partake of holistic care is to work with a certified or licensed professional who has experience with assessing which natural remedies are most appropriate for your specific body and health challenges.

Such professionals are trained to consider all the factors impacting health to optimize healing in a balanced way with various natural healing protocols.

In addition to developing balanced protocols, some practitioners like myself emphasize a complementary and integrative approach instead of alternative approach. Thus, integrative holistic practitioners support the work of western medical professionals by using herbs and acupressure to enhance western based therapies so that clients get the best of both worlds.

For clients who wish to go the all-natural route, an integrative practitioner will explore if that is most beneficial on an individual basis instead of taking the position that natural is always better.

In contrast, an alternative practitioner will tend to emphasize that natural is the best way and rarely will recommend integrating western medical strategies, although responsible alternative practitioners will also acknowledge the limitations of their scope of practice and make referrals to medical physicians when appropriate.

In order to make the herbal remedy for the blood clots, you should prepare those herbs such as fresh yarrow leaves and yarrow juice. The natural honey and garlic should also be available too. Garlic supplements are said to lower cholesterol or blood pressure.

You should drink three cups daily of tea made from yarrow for four weeks or take 1 tbsp. of fresh yarrow juice three times a day. To make one cup of yarrow tea, add two or three dried leaves to 1 1/2 cups of boiling water. Allow the tea to steep for five minutes and sweeten with all natural honey if desired. You'd better add 1 tsp. of each herbal remedy to one cup of boiling water and drink three times a day. Relieve blood stagnation before and after surgery by taking horse chestnut, sweet clover and witch hazel. You should eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially vitamin C, which is required for the building of strong blood vessels. Stay active, taking walks several times daily while wearing loose fitting, comfortable shoes. Stretch regularly, particularly your legs and practice deep breathing, cycling and swimming. Herbal remedies are excellent for preventing and reducing the occurrence of blood clots, however if you are prone to thrombosis discuss all herbal or other remedies with your doctor.

You should take garlic tablets to thin the blood naturally. The other way to thin the blood is to eat three raw cloves per day. Garlic can help to transport unhealthy fats in the blood stream, reducing the risk of blood clots. On the other hand, you could also strengthen and repair connective tissues in veins. You could take 1 tbsp. of horsetail and 1 tbsp. of stinging nettle juice every day. It's really very useful to heal the blood clot. And the cost of herbal remedies is not expensive.

Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate Tea - Ready For Your First Cup?
by Yuri Mathis

Curious as to what this yerba mate tea is all about? You may see people sipping this cloudy green brew at coffee shops around town. Word on the street is this tea packs more nutritional power than even green tea. Or perhaps you've read the hype surrounding yerba mate royale for weight loss and weight control, peaking your curiosity and interest in learning more about the benefits of this special tea.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: guiaturisticaargentina.com

You may just now be hearing about yerba mate tea but it's actually nothing new. In regions of South America, mate has been consumed for centuries by millions of people daily. These populations drink this native beverage over coffee six to one in most regions.

The tea leaves come from a small evergreen shrub that is native to subtropical forests of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Yerba mate tea is a blend of dried leaves and stems of the tree. The brew has long been revered by these cultures as the "drink of the Gods", loaded with twenty-four vitamins and minerals and essential antioxidants and amino acids.

Yerba mate benefits include energy, endurance, immune system support, mental clarity, greater focus and concentration, relief of allergy symptoms and symptoms of mild to moderate asthma. The tea is a vital part of the regimen of the legendary gauchos (cowboys) of Argentine for sustained energy and stamina. Its role as a nutritional supplement has carried regions of South America through bouts of famine and drought that distressed food supply.

The mate circle, the sharing of this tea within a group setting, is a social ritual in parts of Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. The idea is to assemble friends or family in a small grouping to unwind and relax with a shared beverage. The tea is placed inside a hollowed out gourd and the group drinks from the same bombilla -- a small metal drinking straw. Sharing the same cup and the same straw is recognized as a sign of hospitality, goodwill and unity, enriching the mind, soul and relationships of each person who is participating in the ritual.

The taste of yerba mate tea is similar to the taste of traditional green tea. Most people find the vegetal, herbal and grassy taste to be very agreeable. The aroma itself is reminiscent of freshly cut grass on a warm summer day. It is recommended that the tea be brewed with hot rather than boiling water. Steeping the tea leaves in boiling hot water can make it taste very bitter. The use of hot water allows the tea leaves to be infused over and over again by simply adding hot water to the blend until the taste becomes flat.

Despite its presence in South American culture and tradition, yerba drinks had gone largely unnoticed in the United States where coffee and canned energy drinks reign supreme as the beverage of choice to wake up, stimulate alertness and alleviate fatigue.

One of the top benefits of a cup of mate is that the caffeine in the brew is better tolerated than the caffeine in coffee or energy drinks. Those who consume the tea often comment that they don't feel the jitters, anxiety and heart palpitations typically associated with drinking too much coffee or energy drinks. There is also no crash afterward.

Recent studies have suggested that the plant itself differs from other plants containing caffeine, the theobromine value of the plant's leaves being the most significant difference. Theobromine promotes relaxation of smooth muscle tissue. While still stimulating the central nervous system, theobromine is weaker than caffeine and typically will not over-stimulate the central nervous system in the way that caffeine does.

The tea also acts as a diuretic that rids the body of excess water through frequent urination. Colon-cleansing properties are another benefit. Agents within the tea are believed to suppress the appetite and increase metabolism, causing some people to hail it as a modern day diet breakthrough.

Perennial Herb Alfalfa

The Perennial Herb Alfalfa Has Many Medicinal Uses
By Bob Cotto

The perennial herb Alfalfa has many medicinal and dietary benefits and uses. Research shows that this herb may lower glucose and cholesterol in the blood and Alfalfa supplements are safe for oral consumption by most people - there are a few cases where symptoms similar to lupus occurs. Alfalfa sprouts and seeds contain the amino acid L-canavanine which appears to cause the symptom (the leaves however do not contain it). Alfalfa plant leaves are extremely rich in nutrients and minerals which include magnesium, potassium, carotene and calcium. Alfalfa is effective for reducing fevers, contributes to healthy blood and contains natural fluoride which helps prevent tooth decay.

Perennial Herb Alfalfa

The Arabs first used Alfalfa and called it "the father of all foods" and initially used it as horse feed as they believed that it made their horses mighty and swift. Alfalfa has been used as a crop for animals for more than a thousand years as well as herbal medicines. The Chinese have used Alfalfa (as far back as the 6th century) to relieve swelling and fluid retention.

Alfalfa is effective for disorders in the bladder, kidneys and prostrate as well as urinary tract infections while also being a good laxative and diuretic. More recent and significant benefits have been identified - Alfalfa may lower cholesterol levels as it contains substances that adhere to cholesterol thus removing it from the blood and it might play a role in lowering blood sugar levels.

As a food source Alfalfa is great as a vegetable or even in salads and a lot of people say that Alfalfa is important in healthy eating plans. Alfalfa has the highest nutritional value (together with algae and wheat grass), has high dietary fibre content and contains minerals, vitamins and all the necessary digestive enzymes.

Well established Alfalfa consumers say that initially many people will not like its taste (might also create the sense that it is burning the tongue tip) and they recommend that one should persevere as it is definitely an acquired taste. Normally after regular consumption, appetites for heavier foods actually lessen.

A great tea can be made when Alfalfa leaves are left to steep in hot water and is a good source of nitrogen. Plant enthusiasts also use the tea as a foliar spray on plants such as Delphiniums and Irises and Alfalfa is also used as mulch for flower beds.
