Potentially Hazardous

Herbs That are Potentially Hazardous
By Dr Jenny Tylee

I prefer to use herbal medications rather than pharmaceuticals, partly because herbs are gentler and safer. However I am not suggesting that herbs are harmless. Indeed some can be deadly. Listed below are some herbs that should not be taken internally without special care or professional supervision, though some are quite safe for external use (for example, arnica). Many of the herbs that are listed here are used in controlled doses under the supervision of a herbalist. Some of these herbs will also appear in herbal formulae. It is important to read labels and to be aware of the potential effects - beneficial and hazardous of any herb used.

The list below contains some of the potentially hazardous herbs however there are to the precautions or special considerations that need to be given when using some herbs. Some will affect or interact with medical drugs such as the contraceptive pill. Others are also best avoided used during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Arnica (Arnica montana) - should not be taken internally (other than as a homeopathic preparation) as it is potentially toxic, but it provides one of the best remedies for external local healing of bruises and strains.

Belladonna (Atropa belladonna)

Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara) - The stems of bittersweet is used in the treatment of skin and rheumatic complaints. Ointments can be made from the leaves and stems. However the berries have much higher levels of alkaloids and they may be poisonous and have to be avoided.

Bryony (Bryonia dioica)

Chaparral (Larrea tridentata)

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) The roots are for external use only. The leaves can be taken internally but avoid excessive consumption. Care needs to be taken when applying externally to deep wounds as the external application of the leaves can lead to tissue forming over the wound before the wound has healed deeper down leading to the formation of a sinus.

European pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)

False hellebore (Veratrum viride)

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) Digitalis is used in the treatment of heart problems it has the potential to be lethally toxic.

Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger)

Indian snakeroot (Rauwolfia serpentina)

Ipecac (Cephaelis ipecacuanha) - this is a very powerful herb and is an emetic - will induce vomiting and as such is used in the treatment of poisoning. It should be only used in very small amounts - if it is used at all.

Jimsonweed (Datura stamonium)

Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) this is a digitalis is the same as foxglove although without some of its toxic effects. Care still needs to be taken and is best used under the supervision of a health professional.

Male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) - is effective in killing tapeworms. However, it is potentially poisonous in overdose and is best used under the supervision of a health professional.

Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum)

Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum)

Mistletoe (Viscum album) - has a soothing and relaxing effect on the nervous system. However you need to avoid the berries as they can be poisonous.

Pasqueflower (Anemone pulsatilla) - this is an excellent relaxant herb but do not use the fresh plant.

Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegiodes) - is used for abdominal pains and flatulence but do not use during pregnancy as it has been used in large does and an abortifacient.

Pheasant's eye (Adonis vernalis)

Poke root (Phytolacca americana) - has a wide range of uses and is very powerful so it is used in 1/4 of the normal doses. Only use the poke root dried and in small doses. In large doses it will cause vomiting and diarrhea. Never use poke root in pregnancy. Poke root may be toxic if taken in large doses or for an extended period of time. It would be best not to take this herb unless under the supervision of a health professional.

Squill (Urginea maritima) - is used as a powerful expectorant in chronic bronchitis. However the does need is quite small so extra care is needed to prevent overdose.

Yellow jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens)

Take care, not fright!

Other herbs also cause side effects, especially if they are taken in large doses and some herbs should only be taken when under the supervision of a herbal practitioner or other knowledgeable health professional. There is no need to be scared or too afraid to become more self-reliant. However, due care must be taken and sometimes professional advice, supervision or tuition is a worthwhile and sensible step in becoming self-reliant.

Beetroot Juice

Beetroot Juice - Natural Wonder To Fight High Blood Pressure?
By David O'Hara

If you follow health-related issues it's hard to miss the news: beetroot juice is the latest "miracle" food in the fight against high blood pressure. A study conducted by the London School of Medicine has revealed that drinking beetroot juice can significantly lower blood pressure. The effect was noted in healthy volunteers within an hour of consuming the juice. What's more, the reduction in blood pressure was even greater after three to four hours and the effect lasted for up to 24 hours.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: augustus-oils.ltd.uk

Beetroot is high in nitrates, the compounds shown to be responsible for the effect. The nitrates are converted into nitrite by bacteria in saliva. The nitrite is then swallowed with the saliva and exerts a powerful effect on body chemistry that reduces blood pressure. The lowest levels of blood pressure in the subjects coincided with the time of highest nitrite levels in their blood.

With drops in blood pressure of around 10 points systolic and 8 points diastolic compared to the control group, and considering the duration of the effect, these are notable results. But before you beat a path to your local supermarket to stock up on beet juice here are a few points to consider:

  • First, you probably won't find any. Beetroot juice is not commonly stocked by mainstream supermarkets. It can be found in some healthfood stores and ordered via the Internet, although the prices will put many people off. (Don't confuse the liquid in jars of beetroot with the juice. This is merely pickling brine -yuk! - colored by the beets.)

  • The volume of juice required was relatively large: 500 milliliters, equivalent to 2 extra-large glasses.

  • The method of consuming the juice in order to convert the nitrates to beneficial nitrite may also put some people off. At the very least, it's not terribly practical on a regular basis; it requires thoroughly mixing the beetroot juice with saliva and swallowing the mixture. After the initial consumption you need to continue producing saliva and swallowing it over the next few hours (yuk, again!).

NOTE: If you are still keen to follow this procedure do be prepared for a shock on your next visit to the toilet!

  • The subjects of this study were "healthy volunteers". The results do not necessarily predict those that would be experienced by people with high blood pressure Some types of hypertension are extremely resistant to treatment. Testing needs to be conducted on subjects actually afflicted with the condition in order to be more meaningful.

  • Blood pressure reductions obtained in this way and averaged over 24 hours are minimal. Even the reduction of 10 over 8 at the time of maximum impact would not make a significant difference to those suffering from serious hypertension, especially in light of the cost and practical considerations.

So beetroot juice is obviously not the natural wonder you might mistake it for from all the news. But there is still a very positive point to it . Beetroot shares its abundance of nitrates with leafy green vegetables such as spinach, celery and lettuce, all noted for their positive effect on blood pressure. Celery in particular, most notably in the root where the compounds are highly concentrated, has gained widespread recognition as a potent food that can lower blood pressure.

The study reinforces the advice that a healthy diet high in nitrate-rich foods is an essential part of an overall strategy for reducing high blood pressure. Foods that are high in nitrates include not only the leafy green vegetables and beets mentioned above but also carrots, cabbage, radishes and most other vegetables. Curiously, cured meats are also high in nitrates and may not be as bad for you as previously thought. In fact, there is evidence that they may even help in survival and recovery from heart attacks.

In response to a great marketing opportunity, you may well see beetroot juice appearing soon at your local supermarket, maybe even labeled with something like "the natural wonder that fights high blood pressure". Don't fall for it. No single food, supplement or herb is a high blood pressure beater on its own. You're better off spending your money on a varied diet of quality, whole food high in leafy green vegetables and other foods containing nitrates... including beetroot.

Eradicating Diarrhea

Natural, Herbal Treatments For Eradicating Diarrhea
By Vanessa A. Doctor

Diarrhea, or loose bowel movement, can happen for a lot of reasons. Food poisoning and infections are the most common causes of acute, or short-lived diarrhea.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: JupiterImages

The chronic form may be caused by ongoing illnesses of the digestive tract like inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Standard treatments for diarrhea include pinpointing the exact cause, if possible, and, in some cases, treating symptoms with medications that slow down the movement of the digestive tract.

Most diarrhea resolves itself in a few days. It results in complications only in severe cases, with dehydration as the main by-product. In order to effectively replenish the fluids and minerals that have been flushed out of the body, some health experts suggest drinking a quart of carbonated water wherein 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and baking soda have been dissolved.

Dangers Posed By Diarrhea

Diarrhea may cause a loss of significant amounts of water and salts. In most cases, this irritating condition generally clears out on their own without treatment. However, if the ailment persists, you will become dehydrated, or you could pass blood in your stool, and when this happens you need to quickly consult with your doctor.

Herbal Remedies For Alleviating Diarrhea

Any of the following herbs mentioned can either be taken as a capsule or in tea form. For using these ingredients in tea form, the general rule is a teaspoon of herb per cup of boiling water, and steeped in a covered cup for 5 to 15 minutes.

- White Oak Bark

White oak bark contains astringent tannins, and is readily available both as an extract, and in capsules or tea bags. In mixing a tea, add 1/2 teaspoon powdered bark to 1 cup cold water. Boil this mixture for 5 minutes, then strain. Drink one cupful per day.

- Bilberry Tea

In mixing a concoction, use 1 pint of water over 3 tablespoons of dried berries, and let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Bring the mixture to boil for 5 minutes, and drink one cup, 3 to 4 times a day. This tea can also be taken as fresh bilberry juice, drink a cup 3 to 4 times a day.

- Wild strawberry

Teas made from the leaves of wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) can be taken several times a day to alleviate diarrhea. For mixing a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon dried leaves. Steep for 10 minutes, then strain. As a word of caution, the mixture may cause allergic reactions in individuals who are sensitive to strawberries.

- Black Currant. Use the juice from the fresh berries, 1 cup 3 to 4 times a day

- Cloves. Use half a teaspoon per quart of water, steeped in a cup. This herb is helpful in relieving cramping.

- Chamomile, hops, fennel, and a natural laxative such as linseed, have been analyzed to help ease constipation. It is also advised to drink herbal teas rather than coffee.

- Other herbs like golden seal, and an infusion of agrimony, plantain, or geranium are considered helpful, as is peppermint tea.

- Traditional Chinese herbal treatments such as dandelion, golden thread and skullcap root are all also potent anti-diarrheal treatments.

Diarrhea is a serious condition that has major widespread implications on global health, and is generally interrelated with nutritional status. It is an important focal point not only to due to its prevalence worldwide, but also for its mounting health costs. However, this disease can be eradicated or reduced by using the appropriate interventions and timely treatment.

Safe Herbal Medicines

Herbal Medicines - A Safe Alternative
By Steve Hill

In recent years we have seen an increase in peoples interest and use of natural herbal remedies, we can see this in the growth in popularity of aromatherapy as an alternative therapy. The increasing number of herbalists and shops providing herbal remedies, and many people are now paying more attention to what they eat and the effect various foods can have on their bodies health and wellbeing.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: JupiterImages

This rise in popularity is partly attributable to our suspicion that manufactured drugs may have side effects which are causing unknown damage to our bodies but traditional herbal remedies we feel comfortable with, after all they have been used for hundreds of years.

An example of this begins with the common cold, which most of us seem to suffer from each year. Tired of going to the doctor to receive the advice "tough it out" or "take some paracetomal", many people turn to tried and tested remedies that they feel they have always known. When we had colds as children our mother often suggested we could relieve the effects by inhaling the vapor from a bowl of hot water containing a few drops of eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil and lavender. Sitting with a towel draped over our heads in this mini steam-room we are using a remedy that has been known in our families for years and we will pass on as part of our rich oral tradition.

Toothache can be relieved (whilst waiting for your dentist appointment) by rubbing a mixture of clove oil and sweet almond oil into the gum surrounding the painful tooth.

Many plants we can grow in our gardens have healing properties that have been known for years and as a result they often have other names that indicate their use, a good example is comfrey also known as knitbone, boneset, consolida, consormol, consound.

These are just a few examples of the vast amount of information about herbal medicines available, whether it is something you and your family have always known, but need confirming, or in the knowledge of trained experts like herbalists and aromatherapists and even in books or on the internet. So if you think that using herbal medicines is something you would like to explore - get researching.

It is also worth bearing in mind that many pharmaceutical companies spend vast amounts of money researching these "old remedies" and the healing power of herbs and plants in an attempt to mass-produce their properties in the laboratory.

Finally, as a child it was a commonly held belief that if you picked dandelions you would "wet the bed", it was only years later that I discovered that the leaves of dandelions did in fact contain a diuretic (in France they are called "pissenlit") which seems to sum up that many manufactured drugs have common and natural alternatives.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint Oil for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Relief
By Robert Rister

It's not often that a medical journal will recommend an herb as the first line of treatment for a medical condition, but that's the case with peppermint for irritable bowel syndrome. When taken in an enteric-coated capsules in a 180-200 mg dose three times a day, peppermint oil relieves the bloating, constipation, diarrhea and gas of mild IBS in adults and the same symptoms with mild recurrent abdominal pain (diagnosed by a doctor) in children.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: JupiterImages

So what do you need to know to use peppermint oil successfully?

First of all, peppermint sticks, peppermint tea, peppermint candies, and peppermint leaves may be of slight usefulness, but to get the calming effect of the herb you have to take it in an enteric-coated capsule.

The active ingredient in peppermint is the essential oil (never, by the way, take straight essential oil of peppermint, it's just too much). The essential oil is very volatile.

This means it boils off from teas, and it can belched and flatulated away in all other forms except the enteric-coated capsule. Other kinds of peppermint may help you a little, but, once again, the full benefit of the herb for IBS is found in the capsule.

The second thing you need to know about this is that it can sting or burn. A very few people will have peri-anal itching or mild heartburn after taking peppermint. But compare that to the dry mouth and blurred vision of the mainstream prescription drugs.

Finally, you need to know that it will not relieve absolutely every symptom absolutely every time for absolutely everybody who has IBS. It works about 60 per cent of the time, and you may find that one brand works better for you than another for reasons that are peculiar to your body.
Peppermint is not a cure-all for IBS, but it's safe, inexpensive, and usually effective. You can find enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules in pharmacies and health stores all over the world.

Author and natural products formulator Robert Rister writes about holistic healing of IBS and over 100 other topics at his Savvy Natural Healer website.

Healing Herbs

Why Healing Herbs?
By Ashira R

The first question is why would any one use healing plants instead of medicine? The simplest answer is, because they work. They also have the benefit of being able to work with other medicines with little or no danger of interactions or side effects. Healing plants work differently than medications do, they work at a cellular level which means they are working on relieving the cause of the disease. Most medications treat symptoms.

Healing Herbs
Photo: yourhomeandgarden.co.nz

There are three ways to take herbs for the maximum effect according to most herbalists. As an infusion, as a tincture, or as the whole herb. For clarification, a tea would be called an infusion because it is made from the dried herbs. Teas are actually a better source of the healing compounds of the plants verse the powdered herb in capsules as the hot water serves as a solvent to extract the medicinal properties of the herb. They are however, weak in action compared to tinctures.

Tinctures are made by soaking the fresh herb in an alcohol and water solvent for a specific amount of time which releases the medicinal properties. Taking whole herbs gives the best chance to heal. The reason is that all though we have studied herbal medicine, researchers still do not know which component of a herb actually has the healing property.

Before you begin any serious endeavor into treating your body as a whole with herbs, consult with a trained herbalist, homeopathic provider or holistic practitioner. Most herbal remedies take a three to six month period to show marked results.

Some typical formulas that are found to be helpful for the body (especially those suffering from auto immune diseases) are as follows:

Astragalus is a Chinese herbal formula (available in US and produced in US. This formula is available pre made in many health food stores. It works to treat the breakdown of immune functions. It is thought that the formula actually can reduce stress in any person taking it on a regular basis. There are three plants in this compound that work positively in supporting the function of organs and glands.

Schisandra has been used in Asia for the spleen since before the time of Christ. It is effective for any one recovering from an illness. It also assists with depressed adrenal gland functions that results from stress. It is also used to help with the liver. In one test it had a cure rate of 76 percent with patients that had infectious hepatitis when used over an extended period of time. The dried fruit schisandra is available at most Asian food stores.

Astragalus enables the immune response to balance out and is the main herb used to enhance interferon production and secretion. You can either buy an astragalus tincture from an herbal store or it comes in the dried root which you can make a cup of tea from.

Ligustrum is a compound that nourishes and tones the liver and kidneys. Its rejuvenation action is especially helpful for tinnitus and dizziness.

Ashwaganda is an ayurvedic herb well known in India that helps to protect the body from the physical implications of stress. It is safe, effective and is not overstimulating like some other compounds. It helps with sleep and arthritis as well.

Gotu kola is a perennial plant native to India and has been used in India since prehistoric times to treat skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and varicose ulcers. It is also promoted to improve the effects of chronic fatigue.

Ginkgo is a Chinese traditional herb that most every one has heard of. It is shown in new research to increase cardiovascular circulation, cerebral circulation and brain function.

Garlic is a favorite with physicians and herbalists alike. It helps with stomach problems as well as warding of colds and flu. It encourages the growth of certain bacteria in the intestines with killing of many of the organisms that are harmful. It lowers cholesterol levels and can balance blood glucose levels.

Chamomile is probably the most widely recognized relaxing herb in the Western world. It will calm nerves and help you sleep better. But it also helps with digestive problems and nervousness, motion sickness and colic pains.

Lavender helps calm and assist the nervous system that often results in headaches.

Rosemary is not only a spice but is also a circulatory and nervine stimulant which can smooth out the digestive process, treat head aches and mild depression.

Valerian is used to relieve anxiety and when mixed with passionflower works wonders for insomnia.

St John's wort is also a herb which helps with mild to moderate depression.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: newbeingnutrition.com

Peppermint is ancient treatment for the flu and colds that still works today. It also stimulates the bile in your stomach and stimulates digestion.

Fennel can calm the stomach while relieve stomach and intestinal distress. It can also ease bronchitis and coughs.

Ginger is a plant that has been known to stimulate the appetite but it can also help with fevers and digestive problems.

Slippery elm is great for calming the stomach and encouraging bowel movements.

Ginseng has been used for centuries in Asia and in China they begin to take it daily by the age of forty to slow aging and prevent illness. The Chinese still believe that ginseng can fight cancer, prevent heart attack and lower blood pressure. There are a number of variations of ginseng from Siberian to American, each having something in particular that they help in addition to the overall benefits of ginseng.

This is only a tiny fragment of the herbs that are useful to anyone's body to promote general health. A word of caution, always consult with your health care provider before starting any herbal remedy plan.

Bright blessings,

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Natural Chinese Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus Treatment
By Ryan English

The toenail fungal infection is an infection that is caused by live fungi inside, on or around the nail. The nail could be of toe or finger, hands or legs. Fungus grows in dark and moist place and it loves wet atmosphere to live and to spread. The nail is a tough structure with tiny other structures surrounding it like nail-beds, cuticles etc. The nail is closely attached with the skin but then too, there is very micro-space in between them. The fungus finds this as a suitable location to live and to grow as after washing, those micro-spaces remain wet and moist. In addition, the nail protects fungus and it has now full freedom digesting your important structure around and inside the nails.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: www.healthegoods.com

Many remedies are available for curing and preventing such fungal infection of the nails. Chinese medicines, too, have great role in treating such infections. Chinese medicines are known for their potency against various health ailments and they are in practice since centuries. Some of the Chinese home remedies like Citri reticulate, Atractylodis alba, Poria cocos, Cinnamomi, Alismatis, Poly Polus, Jujube, Glycyrrhiza and Magonolia officinalis etc have been used to treat various fungal infections including toenail fungus.

Chinese herbs, when used as a combination, make the product very effective against fungal infections of the toenails and fingernails. For instance, 'Fungo Off' named remedy that contains atractylodis, plantago, dictamnus, alisma, tribulus, kochia, scute, gypsum, phellodendron citrus viride, citrus peel, capilaris, poria, tokoro, and cicade moulting is highly potent against fungal infections. The remedy is not only effective against fungal infection, but it is also the best for yeast, tineas and other infection of the skins. Many local researches support this winning combination having better effects than any oral anti-fungal drug that might produce some side effects. The remedy is cheap and more effective as compared to any other source of treatment for toenail fungal infection.

Just like 'Fungo off' there are many other Chinese preparations used to treat various skin ailments including toenail fungal infection. Many people prefer using the 'Fungo lotion' that is another effective natural Chinese lotion that can kill fungus and hence, can stop its spreading beneath or around the nails. This wonderful lotion contains melia, dictamium, borel, and cnidium in vinegar -sugar solution. The solution creates an environment that is poisonous to the fungus and hence, it is killed effectively. One can apply this lotion minimum for five minutes onto the affected nail. The therapy can be enhanced and healing can be made much faster by applying the 'Fungo Balm', another great Chinese remedy. Fungo Balm contains gypsum, zinc oxide, sophora, kochiae and licorice. The preparation has been used in Chinese medicinal practice to treat various fungal infections including ringworm, athlete's foot, tinea infections etc. The balm carries property of clearing the dampness of the body system and can boost immunity resulting into healing health ailments faster and safer.

Medicinal Ayurvedic Herbs

Ghee Made With Medicinal Ayurvedic Herbs
By Helen Thomas

Ghee (clarified butter) addresses so many health problems - such as restoring sexual vitality and lubricating tissues, nerves and organs. According to Ayurvedic science, ghee helps produce healthy semen, maintains a strong digestive tract, and keeps eyes and memory youthful.

Home Remedies For Better Health
Photo: talyaskitchen.com

Today I want to give you a medicinal ghee recipe that takes the healing process a step further. There are many medicinal ghee mixtures (ghee infused with herbs) - known and trusted for centuries.

Protecting Ourselves From Hard Living

Think of it this way: We inhale a TABLESPOON of solid particles each day (we live in a toxic soup). Doesn't it make perfect sense to moisturize with rich herbs to keep the tissue super clean and sturdy? Today's recipe can be used as both a preventive measure and a treatment for ailments in the ear, nose and throat regions. A half-teaspoon daily protects the body from all those invisible toxins floating around.

I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve mental alertness, calm their nerves and develop powerful focus. Personally, I use it (and prescribe it) to combat allergies, respiratory problems and severe headaches. And let me not forget, this is a fabulous salve for massaging the chakras and rebalancing energy.

Let Me Introduce Some Special Ingredients

I want to introduce you to the herbs that go into this medicinal ghee -- and give you an idea of how each one contributes to the body's balance and wellbeing. As I always say: It's good to read the label and know what's going inside of you.

Ashwanghanda: Effective for fatigue, weakness, impotency, infertility, arthritis and other problems associated with aging. It is similar to Ginseng, but without any of the overheating or over-stimulating side effects.

Brahmi Powder: Treats hair loss and skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis

Meluthi Licorice Powder: Great for bronchial problems, and bowel and urinary infections.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): In India, Shatavari is considered the female equivalent to Ashwagandha. The name translates to "she who possesses 100 husbands" -- referring to the herbs' rejuvenating effect on women's reproductive organs.

Now for the recipe...

Enlightenment Ghee

2 tsp Brahmin Powder

3 tsp Meluthi Licorice Powder

4 tsp of Ashwanghanda

4 tsp Shatavari

1. Crush the herbs in an electric grinder, mortar and pestle, or small food processer.

2. Place in saucepan with 14 cups of water.

3. Simmer the ingredients and reduce until it resembles a creamy thick paste. There should be no loose water in the pan.

4. Add mixture to butter and prepare ghee as normal.

This recipe is enough for 2 lbs of butter. It can be used in any recipes calling for ghee. Add this ghee to your kicharee or mix 1 tsp in warm milk. Enjoy both the taste and the benefits.

Asian Ginseng - Uses of Ginseng
By Robin Brain

Asian ginseng is perhaps the most widely recognized of the plants used in traditional medicine and plays a major role in the herbal health market. It has been used for more than two thousand years. At least six species and varieties of Panax have been used in traditional medicine. It is a popular ingredient in herbal teas and cosmetics. It is promoted for its antistress effects.

Ginseng's dried root is medicinal. It contains triterpenoid saponins called ginsenosides that appear to be the active ingredients responsible for the plant's immunomodulatory effects. Ginsenosides seem to increase natural-killer cell activity, stimulate interferon production, accelerate nuclear RNA synthesis, and increase motor activity.

The ginsenosides have been found to protect against stress ulcers, to decrease blood glucose level, to increase high-density lipoprotein level, and to affect central nervous system activity by acting as a de pressant, anticonvulsant, analgesic, and antipsychotic.

Ginseng is available as powdered root, tablets, capsules, and tea. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura, but it may also occur in the peritoneum or the pericardium. The person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung.

Mesothelioma Lung cancer

Mesothelioma is classified as advanced if it has spread beyond the original membrane surface to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, lungs, chest wall, or abdominal organs. Internal reproductive organs of the male and female bodies are also surrounded by mesothelium tissue. It's composed of two layered cells and develops into a layer of cells that covers and protects most of the body’s internal organs.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Making The Most Of Aromatherapy Essential Oils
By Jon Arnold

Many people think that aromatherapy is nothing more than a hot bath with some kind of perfumed water, but nothing could be further from the truth. Combining the science of aromatherapy with the right essential oils provides one of the highest forms of relaxation that you can find anywhere. But relaxation is not the only benefit of aromatherapy, and quite frequently the desired benefit is the result of the essential oils that are used in the particular session.

First of all, everyone wants to look good from the aspect of having a pleasing physical appearance to others. This good looking appearance starts with having good clean skin, and using the right essential oils in your aromatherapy session is a great place to start. Almost all essential oils also double as excellent moisturizers because they are able to penetrate the skin so deeply. In an aromatherapy session, essential oils are typically known to be extracts from various kinds of plants.

The advantage of using extracts from plants is that the aromatherapy oils are more natural, sometimes referred to as more organic. Sometimes additional chemicals are added to the oils to create a better consistency or a more pleasing aroma, but the purists claim that no additional laboratory-created chemicals be added which simply adds to the overall richness of the treatment for the patient.

In addition to the relaxation and cleansing of the skin, there is a therapeutic value to an aromatherapy session with essential oils. That added benefit is healing for many different types of ailments. While doctors may say there is no scientific evidence to support this claim, they also cannot argue with the hundreds of thousands of people who are more than willing to testify as to the healing powers of the aromatherapy oils. Using just one example from a recent study, almost 80% of the patients in a control group experienced a notable reduction in abdominal pains via the use of peppermint aromatherapy oil.

There are a great number of oils that can be used with aromatherapy, and the one you choose might vary from session to session, depending on whether your primary purpose is relaxation, skin cleansing, or pain relief. Some of the many oils that are very popular include lavender, neroli, lemon, sandalwood, and rose. As far as relaxation, one of the favorites is using equal parts of lavender oil and geranium oil. You may wish to substitute chamomile for the geranium oil, and this has been found to work extremely well to relax children who are very irritable.

Many aromatherapy oils also have anti-inflammatory properties which can work well to relieve the aches and pains found in inflamed joints, such as a pulled muscle and even arthritis. This is recommended for many post-surgery patients to provide them with a more positive frame of mind as well as utilizing the healing benefits.

With so many things going for aromatherapy oils, you owe it to yourself to pamper yourself and give it a try. You are sure to agree quickly that your only regret will be that you did not give it a try sooner!
