Natural Health Care and the Heart

By Paul Varnas

Nutrition is a vital part of good heart health. While much focus is placed on dietary fats, antioxidants, vitamins and nutraceuticals can help to improve cardiovascular health. Antioxidants are cardioprotective. Atherosclerotic plaques are formed long before the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease is made. Antioxidant vitamins protect against plaque formation, according to a study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (August, 2002). Antioxidants can also help protect against high blood pressure.

In the American Heart Association Journal, Circulation (November, 2002), the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet is discussed. Omega-3 fatty acids make the blood less likely to form clots that cause heart attack as well as protect against irregular heartbeats that can cause sudden cardiac death.

In the journal, Cardiovascular Reviews and Reports, (volume 4, number 8, 8/18/03 Role of Nutriceutical Agents in Cardiovascular Diseases: An Update -- Part I), a number of natural health strategies are discussed. Nitric oxide helps to relax and to protect the lining of the arteries. The amino acid, arginine helps with the production of nitric oxide. The article makes note of a few small studies that show the benefit of L-arginine supplementation, which improves coronary blood flow, decreases inflammatory chemicals, and improves angina symptoms. It has even shown to be beneficial to patients suffering from congestive heart failure.

Taurine, another essential amino acid, is also mentioned in the article. Taurine is present in the myocardium, and deficiency has been associated with cardiomyopathy. Cases of cardiomyopathy have responded to taurine supplementation, according to the article (Cardiovascular Reviews and Reports, (volume 4, number 8, 8/18/03 Role of Nutriceutical Agents in Cardiovascular Diseases: An Update -- Part I). Once again, small clinical studies seem to support the value of taurine.

The article also cited studies supporting the use of Co Q-10. One five-year study, involving 126 patients showed improvement in congestive heart failure patients-without any adverse effects. Another study showed that Co Q-10 supplementation improved blood pressure, reduced left ventricular hypertrophy and improved exercise capacity in heart patients. One group of authors proposed that Co Q-10 supplementation could help increase the amount of time heart transplant patients could wait for a donor heart.

Vitamin K has anticoagulant activity (Thromb Haemost, 2005;205(93):799-800). Vitamin K2 carboxylates matrix GLA protein, which is the most powerful and abundant inhibitor of arterial calcification (quoting Dr. Mark Houston's presentation on the subject). The benefits Co Q10 and resveratrol can be seen elsewhere in this newsletter. VasculoSirtTM contains CoQ10, Vitamin K2, resveratrol, acetyl L- carnitine, R-alpha lipoic acid and B complex vitamins and is designed to improve blood flow.

Nutritional support and other aspects of natural health care can be of great value-even when traditional medical treatment must be utilized. Natural health care treats the patient-not the disease. It is always a valuable approach, no matter what the disease process.

The Necessity of Vitamins and Minerals and Supplements

By Ben Ehinger

Our bodies undergo an interesting transformation when we have a part of our body experiencing disease or infection. That area of our body usually becomes inflamed (it swells). On our skin, we notice an infection as a red spot around the area and that it hurts to touch it or the surrounding area. Similarly, an internal organ or a bone joint experiences the same inflammation. This is your body telling your mind that there is a serious problem that demands attention.

Home Remedies For Better Health

The inflammation is caused by an increase in blood to the affected area. But the increase is not always good for you. When an athlete is hurt or bruised, one of the first treatments is ice. The ice reduces the inflammation and allows the healing process to begin and complete more quickly.

We can examine a simple case of heartburn. People who suffer from chronic heartburn are often diagnosed with have acid reflux disease and prescribed the little purple pill. Acid reflux inflames your inner organs and causes a burning or nauseous sensation that can be very uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

Interestingly, sea vegetation has been proven to control and even stop inflammation from occurring. While some people may see this as turning off a defense mechanism, it is not. When we experience disease, sickness or injury, there is usually some level of inflammation with it and the inflammation typically hurts and can spread. There is a natural occurring chemical in sea vegetation that can stop or reduce inflammation from occurring in our bodies.

The use of sea vegetation to stop or reduce inflammation from occurring in our bodies has been used for many years and by people from cultures from all over the world. Eastern cultures such as those in Japan and China and those in India have very successfully used sea vegetation for heartburn and other inflammatory problems. The use of sea vegetables to stop or reduce inflammation is growing in popularity in Western cultures with the introduction of liquid supplements that contain sea vegetables as one of their main ingredients.

There are a number of varieties of sea vegetation and each is a different color. Scientists and naturalists use colors to categorize the different varieties. The brown sea vegetable used to fight inflammation, acid reflux disease, and other problems is called Fucus Vesiculosus. That's why we simply call it brown sea vegetation! The way to prepare the brown sea vegetation is to boil about one once of dried sea vegetables for 20 to 40 minutes in clear pure water. Once it is done, strain out the sea vegetation and drink the extracted juice.

Due to pioneering work in India, we in the West can trust and use sea vegetation in our daily diets. We can in fact, use sea vegetables in our daily diets (or as a vitamin supplement) for the prevention of inflammation. Preventing, reducing, or stopping inflammation helps our bodies heal more quickly and more completely.

The Power of Antioxidants

By Jerry Ryan

Our bodies are designed to take care of themselves. There are systems within it for providing nutrients and for excreting the toxins. Antioxidants play a major role in removing these toxins from our body. Since they are so important in ridding us of harmful waste, it is vital that we have some knowledge of what antioxidants are, how they work and what kinds of foods and dietary supplements can provide us with their health benefits.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Antioxidants are a group of enzymes, vitamins and minerals that work to protect our bodies from forming free radicals. Free radicals in the body are atoms or groups of atoms that cause cell damage which impairs the immune system. Free radicals may be formed in a number of different ways. They can be caused by any number of bodily functions even the process of breaking down fat cells into usable energy.

To better explain this, our bodies are similar to a car. Each needs the proper fuel to perform to its peak. But just like the engines in our cars, our bodies don’t burn the fuel efficiently. This poor conversion results in exhaust fumes in our car and free radicals in our body.

Most commonly, the free radicals are missing an electron due to some metabolic process. The negative atom attempts to correct itself by pulling an electron from another cell. The damage begins at that point and a chain of cells pulling electrons from one another starts to form. As a result, this can lead to infections and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, recent studies have shown that damage caused by free radicals may be a major factor in the aging process.

Other causes are cigarette smoke (even second-hand), overexposure to the sun, exposure to radiation as well as inhaling or ingesting any of the pollutants common in our air, water and food chain.

Luckily, our bodies have a built-in weapon against this enemy. Free radical scavengers, such as enzymes, are naturally produced in the body. They seek out and bond with the free radicals. This bonding neutralizes the destructive action that occurs in the cells.

However, with the increased levels of toxins that we are subjected to daily, the antioxidants that the body supplies may fall short of the demand. Therefore, we might consider changing our diet to increase certain foods and taking nutritional supplements that will provide additional antioxidants for the body to use.

Home Remedies For Better Health

As you have probably read in many popular magazines, vitamins A, C and E have been found to act as very good antioxidants. Foods that offer high levels of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables, particularly the yellow-green vegetables. Other herbs and supplements that serve as antioxidants are: Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Bilberry, Chokeberry, Elderberry, Coenzyme Q10, Cysteine, Glyconutrients, Ginkgo Biloba, Glutathione, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea, Pine Bark Extract, Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins, Pycnogenol, Melatonin, Selenium, Magnesium, Superoxide Dismutase, Beta-Carotene and Zinc.

Water Features - Ionize For Health

By Raquel Welsh

Most people purchase home water features for plethora reasons; to enhance their home decor or decorating style, to mimic what they have seen in other homes or on decorating-oriented television shows, to change other's perceptions of the their sophistication or to embrace guests with their elegance, for the artful beauty or soothing presence water features provide, or just about any other reasons imaginable. Although any of these motivators for purchasing are appropriate, most miss the most fundamental purpose of water features... health.

Select house plan

All of us in our daily lives are surrounded by electrically charged Ions. Some of these ions are good for us while others are bad. Ions, in simple terms, are atoms or molecules that are either positive or negative in electrical charge, but the association of positive and negative is counter intuitive when discussing impact on humans; negative is good, positive is bad. These ions, bad or good, are consumed without our permission with every breath we take.

Positive ions are all around us. They are "thrown off" by every electrical device around you from hair dryers to microwave ovens, televisions to computers. Do you sleep with an electric blanket in the winter? Then you have found another source. The worst cases of positive ions you have most likely heard about but paid little attention to are in more recent news reports and research surrounding high-power lines over schools and playgrounds in some communities, and their impact on the health of children. Positive ions also have been correlated to many medical illnesses and disorders from Alzheimers to birth defects, and cancer to SIDS, with some of the most reported side effects being depression and chronic fatigue. Positive ions are also "released" from other nonelectrical sources like car exhaust, cigarette smoke, and others.

Negative ions on the other hand have a positive impact on your health. Negative ions are naturally produced by many means. Natural production of negative ions is most concentrated in clean, fresh air that is not subject to an overabundance of electrical sources. This presents a bit of a dilemma in our day as air quality is on the decline, and living in an electromagnetic world continues to accelerate. But take heart. There is an alternative without having to move to an obscure cabin atop the highest mountain and hunt your next meal. The production of negative ions can be created out of thin air.

The best sources for the rapid production of negative ions are in the movement of water: ocean waves, natural waterfalls, and the evaporation of water, etc. When water molecules are ruptured by movement, the crashing on rocks for example, the negative ions "stick" to the positive ions (bad guys) and neutralize them. Whether it be a dust particle or the electromagnetic field caused by your clock radio, the positive ion will dissipate. One less bad guy in your life.

So how do you produce this effect out of thin air? The easiest way is with indoor fountains and waterfalls. From the smallest tabletop to the largest wall mounted or floor model, the water droplets will rupture on impact at the end of their journey; taking with them a few of the positive ions and their negative impact on your life. You will not only enhance your home decor and provide yourself and family with a soothing and relaxing atmosphere to enjoy, your water feature will ionize your health!

Raquel Welsh is a fanatic about liquid home decor and design. She attributes this to being born in the sign of Aquarius. She is self-taught in the health benefits of water features in the home and their grand impacts on interior design. Raquel began decorating with fountains, waterfalls, bubbling accents, and designer aquariums and fish bowls for friends and family more than ten years ago. Recently she took her talents online and now offers an ever-growing line of water features for all to enjoy at H2O Home Decor.

Lower Blood Pressure Through Relaxation?

By David O'Hara

Does relaxation (i.e. stress relief) really lower blood pressure?

This is not a simple yes or no question. The short, quick answer is yes. Take your blood pressure immediately after arriving home from work. Scary, isn’t it? As if the workday wasn't stressful enough, many of us tend to brood about it on the way home. And commuter traffic doesn’t help much either!

Now relax for 15 minutes and take your blood pressure again. If you’ve genuinely relaxed, your blood pressure is almost guaranteed to be lower, often substantially. (If either figure of your relaxed reading is still above 140/90 you may be hypertensive, although further monitoring is needed.)

browse thousands of global tours and activities

The long view…

So relaxation certainly does have the ability to relieve high blood pressure. The longer answer, however, is more complicated. That’s because blood pressure reduction from relaxation alone tends to be short-lived. Depending on many factors, your baseline blood pressure may return within minutes or hours of resuming normal activities. And if that baseline is high you have only gained a temporary reprieve from the dangers of hypertension.

So it might appear that relaxation has a valid, if limited, role in treating high blood pressure. But a new method called slow breathing with music may go a long way towards shifting this balance. So-called relaxation tapes have been around for a long time but these offer only a passive experience. You chill-out to a blissful track, your blood pressure drops and – like the proverbial Chinese food – you’re stressed out and hypertensive again three hours later!

Proactive relaxation?

Slow breathing with music, by contrast, combines relaxing music with a clinically proven natural treatment to lower blood pressure, slow breathing. This is not just a passive listening experience. The soundtrack integrates a pleasant-sounding guided breathing track with gentle, soothing music. Listeners simply synchronize their breathing with the track and relax to the music.

Extensive research has revealed that breathing at a rate below 10 breaths per minute and in a specific pattern for 10 to 15 minutes a day lowers blood pressure. What’s even more surprising is that the effects are cumulative and begin to last around the clock after just a few weeks of slow breathing – a result that relaxation does not generally achieve on its own.

It's a matter of balance

These superior results are because slow breathing does not rely on relaxation alone. Some of its benefit is no doubt due to its relaxing effect on major blood vessels in the chest, relieving the load on the heart. But slow breathing may also affect the body’s sodium uptake, a major factor in hypertension. "Slow, deep breathing does relax and dilate blood vessels temporarily, but that's not enough to explain a lasting drop in blood pressure," says Dr. David Anderson, a major slow breathing researcher with the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Anderson believes that what he calls "inhibitory breathing" knocks the blood’s chemical balance off kilter, making it more acidic. This makes the kidneys less efficient at pumping out sodium and in turn raises blood pressure. If slow breathing does in fact relieve high blood pressure by affecting sodium levels it amounts to a powerful diuretic without side effects!

A powerful combination!

But don’t yet underestimate the power of relaxation. Ironically, the clinical trials also show that relaxation is a vital ingredient in the slow breathing formula: the more relaxed you are, the greater the benefits! Conversely, without relaxation the method simply doesn’t work.

That’s why slow breathing with music is proving so effective. Genuine music of the right type provides the essential relaxation and has therapeutic value in its own right. And one further contribution of music is the enjoyment that ensures regular use (because no program will work from the back of a drawer, which is precisely where most "relaxation tapes" end up!).

Neither relaxation nor slow breathing nor music on their own are very effective at producing lasting reductions in high blood pressure. But slow breathing with music – plus relaxation – is a powerful combination indeed.

David O'Hara is a researcher and product developer in the field of natural health and blood pressure control. Click here to find out more about lower blood pressure and stress relief using slow breathing with music.

Remedy For Hemorrhoids - What Works Best, Modern and Traditional Treatments

By John Tulley

Hemorrhoids are one of the most comically funny yet painful ailments around. Granted, it's not funny when you're the one suffering it - though everyone else will often get a good chuckle at your expense. Hemorrhoids happen when the veins in your anus swell up as a result of blood blockages in the hemorrhoidal complex of the anus. In layman's terms, veins in your butt hole swell up badly and become sensitive to pressure. In bad cases these veins actually swell up enough to stick out of your butt hole, making the process of sitting down painful. Heck, it makes walking painful if your butt cheeks rub against those veins. So, to avoid the pain and to avoid giving your wife, kids, work associates, and friends an excuse to heckle you mercilessly over it, you should look into trying out these common remedies for hemorrhoids. Your life won't depend on it, but your dignity might...

Home Remedies For Better Health

An ounce of Prevention...

In case you're lucky enough to have only a mild case of hemorrhoids you should know some of the most common causes of it so you can take steps to keep it from getting worse. Constipation is a primary culprit, so if you have a tough time on the toilet bowl you should really consider fixing your diet up a bit and drinking more fluids. Diarrhea is likewise another factor that causes hemorrhoids. So whether it's too much or too little output from your anus, fix it up bub! Another common cause is physical - prolonged periods of sitting and especially squatting down, or heavy lifting (which usually makes you clench your butt cheek muscles in sympathy with the other muscles in your body) are both causes of hemorrhoids. If either of these ring a bell in your head, you know what to do.

Modern Fixes

Modern treatments for hemorrhoids include medicinal ointments to soothe the inflammated veins or using hot or cold compresses to bring down the swelling. These are household fixes that anyone can do. In severe cases however and usually as a last option remedy for hemorrhoids is to have the veins surgically operated on to either tie them off or remove them completely. Not exactly a very pleasant thing to consider, but some people figure it worth the relief from pain. Conventional medicinal ointments aside, there are also "butt plugs", which are soluble lubricated medical pills designed to be stuck up the butt to heal hemorrhoids. As much as this is a valid medical procedure, just make sure no one else is around when you do this or you'll never live it down.

Traditional Fixes

One odd but effective traditional remedy for hemorrhoids includes placing a teaspoon of alum in a glass of water and applying it to the swelling. Another one uses 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with water to be drunk at every meal to stop bleeding hemorrhoids. Eating cranberries or drinking cranberry juice is also very good for preventing hemorrhoids. Iodine is also very good at getting immediate hemorrhoid relief. Coating the affected area with iodine brings down swelling very quickly. However, it stings... Lastly, general lubricant ointments like vaseline are good for getting gentle relief from hemorrhoids. It doesn't stop them outright, but at least it makes the pain more tolerable while you wait for the swelling to subside naturally or look for your other medication.

About the author: John Tulley writes for Alpha7 Venapro remedy for hemorrhoids web site. Our web site has more detailed information on finding an effective hemorrhoid treatment.

By Cindy Heller

Today, most of the people do not know they have high blood pressure, because it has no overt manifestations, such as pain, dizziness or headaches. Then how most of the high blood pressure or hypertension is discovered? However, garlic has a side effect, it has negative interaction with blood-thinning drugs like Aspirin, Warfarin, Heparin and large doses used by pregnant women can cause a miscarriage. It also may put the patient at risk of bleeding.

Another highly effective natural remedy for high blood pressure is Hawthorn leaves and flowers. This Hawthorn do not has the negative effects of garlic and coleus. Hawthorn works by regulating the heart's blood-pumping ability. Its usually comes in capsules; you should be carefully using this herb and never exceed the recommended dose since this could cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Stevia leaves are the most recent herbal medicine use for high blood pressure. Stevia is a calorie-free sweetener that also appears to lower high blood pressure. But since more research is needed to insure Stevia's effectiveness and safety, it should only be used under the care of a doctor to avoid a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Some herbs also can use to prevent high blood pressure. You should monitor your blood pressure regularly; if you see some thing not usual you should stop using the herbs and consult your doctor immediately. Prevent it is better than cure.

Interested In a Ginger Acid Reflux Remedy?

By Kathryn Whittaker

As a sufferer of acid reflux, you may be taking pills, and you may have been taking them for a very long time. This can start to become expensive. You might even wonder what the long-term effects of taking medication might be. Acid reflux is wide spread, and there are many who simply don’t want to take another pill, and want to try natural remedies to see if they can find another way to keep symptoms under control. Many believe that a ginger acid reflux remedy is all they need to feel better each and every day.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Ginger is a natural product that you probably already have in your home, and you are probably familiar with it. You can get ginger in its whole root form or as ground ginger. Ginger is very popular in Chinese and Asian cuisine, and therefore the root is in demand. It’s a very versatile plant root and if it helps you with acid reflux, that is one more great use it can have.

You may already have had some experience with using ginger as a digestive remedy. Though not as common today, many moms used to give flat ginger ale to their children when they had an upset stomach. The ginger in the drink would calm and sooth the stomach. It was important that it was flat, because the carbonation would have the opposite affect. Many moms swore by that remedy, and many still do. Also, ginger has long been used as an effective anti-nausea treatment and pregnant women find it helpful to combat morning sickness. So if you suffer with nausea as a symptom of acid reflux ginger can help with that too.

You may find that if you add a ginger acid reflux treatment to your day, you won’t have to take your pills any longer. Some recommend that if you have at least 500 mgs of ginger with a meal you will see a reduction in your reflux symptoms or you might find relief right away. Ginger also helps with indigestion and gas, which might be the root of your reflux problem.

If you want to try something other than a ginger supplement you can make your own ginger tea. You can buy this is the store, but when you make it on your own, you can be sure it is as pure and fresh. Simply buy ginger root (you can find it in the produce section at the store), peel about half and inch, slice finely and add to hot water and steep. Once you are done, you have a lovely tea you can have before each meal to help with your indigestion and reflux problems. If the taste is not that palatable for you add a small amount of natural honey. Try Manuka honey as this has good antibacterial properties.

Another benefit of a ginger acid reflux remedy is that ginger can help your stomach work more efficiently. During digestion the walls of the stomach move, and ginger acts as a stimulant for this process. It doesn’t mean your stomach will cramp from the motions, it just means the gentle movement needed will be enhanced. This results in faster digestion, and less problems with acid, gas, and your food will not be sitting there making you feel bloated and uncomfortable. Ginger is one natural remedy that you can try without too much worry, and you should be able to tell rather quickly if this is something that is going to work for you.

Chasteberry

By Patricia McDougall

Chasteberry is a medicinal herb primarily used to help moderate PMS and symptoms of menopause like hot flashes. By taking capsules of this herb women can lead a more productive life free from the debilitating symptoms associated with PMS and menopause.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Chasteberry is a potent ingredient in medications for fibroid cysts, help clear acne disorders, and even prevent miscarriages in pregnant women. Chasteberry contain flavoniods, iridoid, terpenoids and glycosides. The action of these compounds on the pituitary glands and the production of the luteinizing hormone create a positive effect on women's periods; it is thought that this hormone can assist women become pregnant. As a fertile aid, it will restore the hormonal balance while promoting the health of the reproductive system. If you use this as an aid for fertility, follow the directions prescribed.

The use of chasteberry was made popular by a German pharmaceutical firm in the 1950s. It has become a regular prescription for premenstrual syndromes. The body produces prolactin. During pregnancy this is a natural occurrence. However, when it is produced to high levels in women who are not pregnant; it will cause painful breast tenderness. Chasteberry herb reduces PMS symptoms by regulating the release of prolactin. Women have resorted to this natural drug when their menses have stopped. However, women are advised to see a physician as there may be underlying causes for the cessation of the menses during the reproductive years.

This berry is found in the Mediterranean area. The berry is the fruit of the chaste tree, which is a small shrub with blue flowers. The shrub grows to a height between 1 to 5 meters. It thrives well under full sun and partial shade. The dark berries are picked when ripe between the months of October and November. Before these are processed, these are dried under the sun. For medications, the fleshy part of the berry is used. The berries contain glycocides, flavonids, and essential oils. The berry was used for centuries to cure menstrual cramps and pains. In the modern times, studies showed that there was no adverse effect on women taking chasteberry-based medication. Chasteberry supplements are available in tablets, tea, cream, and tincture forms. The benefits of the berry fruit of the chaste shrub cannot be ignored. It would do well to take the supplements to calm pains and cramps as well improve sexual vigor. Sports Drinks - To Drink or Not To Drink?

By Keri Silk

As I enter my gym I encounter cases of sports drinks and energy bars. There is even a counter where they will mix up a so-called healthy concoction for me. With all these options certainly they must be good for me or are they?

A recent alert in Science Daily heralds the switching of many schools from soda vending to sports drinks. The idea of course is that the drinks and bars are filled with additional minerals electrolytes, protein and other nutrients needed for energy and good health.

Sport Drink

While that may be true, beware. In many cases these “Healthy” additives are not really needed. Do you really need to pile on the protein? How many B vitamins does your body require? Do some research before you pay for unneeded extra value.

Amazingly, these bars and drinks may have hidden amounts of sugar, sodium or fats. These additions make them taste great but counteract any health benefits. The United Press International quotes Margo G. Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington as saying that energy drinks are no more than water with high salt and high sugar. She suggests sticking to plain tap water for a healthy choice. Could there be other reasons that the added ingredients

My daughter suffers migraines and finds the highly caffeinated energy drinks help. She chooses the low carb variety to avoid the extra sugar. In the Monster drink, in my fridge, (which contains 2 servings per can) she receives twice the 180 mg of sodium or 16% of her Daily Value. Also Riboflavin 200%, Niacin 200%, Vitamin B6 200%, B12 200%, as well as Taurine, Panax Ginseng, L-Camtine, Caffeine, Guarana, and sugars (only 6g total). To her the relief is well worth it.

Others find the energy and metabolism boosting ingredients extremely beneficial to weight loss. Guarana, in particular, boosts energy and metabolism. Guarana is all-natural. It comes from a plant native to the Amazon basin. According to Weinberg and Bealer, authors of The World of Caffeine: The Science and Culture of the World's Most Popular Drug, each fruit contains about one seed, which contains approximately three times more caffeine than coffee beans. No wonder it gives a huge burst of energy!

Despite similar ingredients all energy drinks are not created alike. And not everyone needs the additives. Still if you are curious, or just believe all the hype, be sure to read the labels carefully, to know what your individual body needs and make an educated decision. Beware of assuming they are good for you simply because they are well marketed through trusted sources like your gym, school or health food store. Good fresh cold water and a healthy diet may really be all you need.

Road To Recovery

Recovering from an injury, illness or operation begins with rehabilitation. It’s a process that can be both physically and emotionally challenging. That’s why choosing the best facility is so important.

The patient or family member making the decisions need to work close with the referring physician, who can provide vital information to better understand the rehabilitation process, evaluate the options and help make an informed decision on the available choices.

Successful rehabilitation combines the efforts of physical, occupational and speech therapies with rehabilitative nursing, social services and sound medical direction.

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is designed to meet the needs of those patients who have lost functional independence as a result of injury or illness.

This therapy helps patients regain strength and balance, mobility and walking skills, and to recover from painful injuries.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy provides therapeutic activities that are intended to help residents achieve the highest level of independence in daily life. It teaches self-care skills, including eating, dressing, grooming, as well as mobility from bed to wheelchair or toileting and bathing.

This type of therapy also aids in easing emotional and social adjustment. Speech Therapy This is geared specifically for people with speech, language, swallowing or hearing disorders. This therapy teaches patients to speak more clearly, swallow without difficulty and use hearing aids effectively.

“Every rehabilitative facility is unique,” states James Elton administrator for Manor Care Health Services, South Ogden Utah. “Getting the combination of therapies, nursing and social services, and medical support that best suits the needs of you or a loved one can often be a challenge. Work close with your or your loved one’s discharge planner and primary physician to talk about the condition and rehabilitative needs as well as transitional rehabilitative support from hospital to home.”

Every individual is unique. So, too, is the type of care required. Understanding your loved one’s physical and mental well-being is necessary in determining the type of care that is best for him or her. Transitioning from a hospital back home can be difficult without the proper rehabilitation services.

Herbal Supplement

By Rolf Rasmusson

Herbal Supplement – what is it?

So what is an herbal supplement? The herbal supplement is a supplement that provides you body with various nutrients necessary for your health and which is based of herbs and natural products. There are a wide variety of different types of herbal supplements available in the market nowadays. The benefits that each herbal supplement claims are also numerous and diverse.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Herbal Supplement – the risks.

Many of the benefits that some type of herbal supplement or supplements claims on its label are not supported by scientific evidence or scientific research. According to medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay, preliminary research on St. John's wort for depression and gingko biloba for improvement cognitive function has not shown much of a benefit beyond that of the placebo effect. That doesn’t mean though that all herbal supplements are fake. That only means that there is such a risk until more research is done.

Herbal Supplement – the variety.

You can find a great range of different brands, ingredients, and doses of herbal supplements in health food stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, discount stores, etc. According to medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay, there are at least 880 different variations of the 10 best selling herbs. It can become very confusing to choose the best herbal supplement.

Numerous brands vary significantly in the ingredients used in production of some type of herbal supplement and in recommended dosages. The prices vary significantly too. You can definitely find the cheap or discounted herbal supplements, but with the price drop the quality usually drops. Also with cheap herbal supplements you have a greater chance of purchasing a fake product. Consult with your doctor or other health professionals before you start taking some type of herbal supplement.

Important of Vegetables

By Praba Kar

Vitamin K, usually associated with leafy green vegetables, is an important factor in proper blood clotting and bone metabolism. Researchers at the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston, along with the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, has found that vegetable oils are also an excellent source of vitamin K.

Home Remedies For Better Health

To attain a more comprehensive understanding of vitamin K content of various fats and oils used by consumers in the U.S., the researchers analyzed margarines, spreads, butters, shortening, vegetable oils, and salad dressings

Their results showed that vitamin K content decreased with hydrogenation, the process of converting liquid oils to semisolid forms by adding hydrogen molecules to the fatty acid. Butter was shown to contain less vitamin K than vegetable-derived oils and spreads, corroborating the current USDA dietary guidelines recommending that consumers obtain most of their dietary fat from nonhydrogenated vegetable sources. The concentration of vitamin K varied according to fat content, which is why reduced-fat salad dressings contain lower amounts of the vitamin.

The guidelines suggest that women take in 90 micrograms of vitamin K a day, while the adequate intake (AI) requirement for men is 120 micrograms. One tablespoon of margarine would be equal to about 10 percent of the AI for men and 13 percent for women; two tablespoons of regular salad dressing provides 25 percent and 33 percent of the AI for men and women, respectively.

The researchers also measured blood concentrations of several molecules that the body secretes in response to stress. High readings for these molecules can indicate increased vulnerability to various illnesses because stress molecules, such as various hormonelike prostaglandins, induce inflammation and oxidative stress. Inflammation normally aids the repair of injured tissue as part of the body's infection-fighting defenses, but when a person's internal regulatory mechanisms are faulty, systemic low-grade inflammation can cause progressive damage. Natural Deodorants You Never Heard Of

By Marilee Tolen

Why the interest in natural deodorants? Just like every other part of the body, the underarm area has a purpose. It allows the body to cleanse and detoxify itself along with helping to regulate the body's temperature. The sweat glands under the arm and the lymph nodes are part of the "excretory system" of the body which helps the body "excrete" the toxins.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Almost every antiperspirant on the market contains aluminum. Aluminum is a heavy metal and can stress the body. The body doesn't have a mechanism to easily rid itself of metals. Why burden part of the excretory system with a heavy metal when there are natural alternatives that are often less expensive?

Here are some:

--Baking soda Keep a box at your bathroom sink and sprinkle on your palm and apply it under your arm like a powder

--Corn Starch Keep a box at your bathroom sink and apply under your arm

--Vinegar Dilute white vinegar with water and splash under arm

--Essential Oils Lavender, melaleuca (tea-tree), rosemary, thyme. Use only therapeutic-grade. Splash a few drops under your arm.

--Combine baking soda, cornstarch, and your favorite essential oil in a container and use under your arm

--Natural Toothpaste Most natural toothpastes have baking soda, salts, and essential oils. (Don't use Tom's, it has propylene glycol). Put a dab on your finger and rub under your armpit. Just know the toothpastes with mint will be a bit more refreshing! The mint sensation will last just a few minutes.

It's best that you don't apply anything immediately after shaving. Commercially, a good alternative is crystal stone deodorants. It you are feeling industrious and want to make your own solid deodorant at home, here's a recipe:

1 1/2 tbs beeswax (yellow is best) 1/2 tbs cocoa butter1 tablespoon coconut oil15 drops thyme essential oil15 drops rosemary essential oil25 drops lavender essential oil3 drops castor oil Melt beeswax in a glass jar standing in hot water, add the cocoa butter, and when it has melted, add the oils. Stir to mix thoroughly, then pour into a clean, empty deodorant stick case and leave to cool and set.

Ginseng: Root of Immortality

By Nur Syahid

Translated to mean man root in Chinese, the name ginseng premises on the belief that the roots, with their attached limbs, resemble a human being. Due to its perceived kinship with the gods, the Chinese named it the root of immortality. Indeed, being closely associated with longevity and masculinity, the ginseng has always been regarded as the King of all tonics among the Chinese.

Home Remedies For Better Health

History

In 18th century American folklore, ginseng was thought to have the powers to frighten spirits away. The Jesuits exported it as a valuable commodity, along with rare furs, and this was how the American Indians came to be acquainted with its valuable medicinal properties.

The Latin name of ginseng is panax, which means panacea. Like the Asian ginseng, the Panax variety is believed to be imbued with masculine properties. Soviet cosmonauts used Siberian ginseng for alertness in outer space. Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) is a native spring shrub in the woodland areas of Siberia and Korea while Panax is a herbaceous perennial that finds its fertile ground in North American forests.

The value of ginseng lies mainly in its roots, which have plenty of branches and flesh. They take at least six years to mature and should not be harvested early. To ensure that the numerous root limbs attached to the main root do not break off when harvested, the ginseng should be unearthed carefully and dried for at least one month before use. Ginseng has thin stems with 5 to 6 veined leaves each. Tiny flowers cluster near the main stem.

Cultivation of ginseng is now done with extreme care as the once-plentiful supply has almost decimated, thanks to escalating popularity. It comes as no surprise then that ginseng seeds now come at a heavy price.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Health Notes

Ginseng is held in high regard in China due to its rejuvenating powers and ability to provide stimulation to the whole body and offer protection against fatigue and disease in general. It is a good remedy for inflammation, fever, hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, diabetes and anemia. A stimulant for the central nervous system and endocrine glands, the demulcent effects of ginseng also make it soothing for mucous membranes. New studies show that ginseng may be effective for heart protection and cancer. Use ginseng with caution if you are pregnant.
